Service-learning connects community action and education. It makes learning real and alive.

To get started, decide what you want to learn (about issues, people, skills, course topics, etc.) and develop an action project that fits your learning goals and meets a community need. To get ideas for community action projects, check our Volunteer Opportunities List. When you contact a community organization, let them know your learning goals and see if there is a good fit.

A key part of service-learning is reflection, which means looking at your action experience, making connections, and discovering what these connections mean for you. Ways of reflecting include writing in a journal, talking with other service-learners, artistic creations, and presentations.

All of this will be easier if you are part of a service-learning course or program. We can help you find one.

Another resource we have for you is a Service-Learning Agreement, which you can use as a contract with a community agency. This Agreement outlines some important guidelines for students, teachers, and community agencies.
