Criteria for Service-Learning Opportunities

• Non-profit or public agency serving community or environmental needs (or for-profit agency, such as a hospital, whose purpose is serving a social need).
  
• Agency provides service opportunities that can fit students' learning goals.
  
• Agency has volunteer assignments (one-time or weekly) that can be completed within one quarter (up to ten weeks), with the possibility of continuation beyond the term.
  
• Agency incorporates risk-management procedures for injury prevention and liability reduction.
  
• Agency screens volunteers, as needed.
  
• Contact person, volunteer manager, and/or supervisor will:
  
  • Respond quickly to student inquiries
    
  • Let students know quickly whether they are needed
    
  • Place students in service opportunities that connect their educational goals with agency/client needs
    
  • Ensure that students are oriented, trained, and directly supervised
    
  • Record student hours
    
  • Communicate with students and/or their instructors about problems and successes
    
  • Assist students to connect their service experience with their learning goals
